Blue Sapphire Grand Theatre
A scaffold-built neon sign, hung back up in Kaohsiung's night sky, recreates the Blue Sapphire Grand Theatre and revives an era of shows that once captivated all of Taiwan. The variant characters on the sign — still typeable today — were a trick old neon craftsmen used to simplify strokes, stand out, and stay legible.
The Blue Sapphire Grand Theatre is one of the defining symbols of Taiwan's stage-show culture. Open from 1975 to 1995 at the corner of Bade 2nd Road and Tong'ai Street in Kaohsiung's Xinxing District, it was built from sheet metal and became the city's first theatre hall — its influence spreading across Taiwan and as far as Southeast Asia.
