Kaohsiung Film Festival 2024

This year’s Kaohsiung Film Festival embraces the theme “Youth in Limbo,” featuring a lineup of coming-of-age films that center on uniform-clad high school protagonists navigating the turbulent transition from adolescence to adulthood. These stories capture the intensity, adventure, confusion, and inner struggles that often accompany the growing pains of youth.

When I first learned that the visual concept would revolve around “youth,” I felt a twinge of resistance. After all, youth feels like a distant memory. It’s a concept so rich and multifaceted, layered with sweetness, bitterness, joy, and sorrow—how could all of that possibly be expressed through a single visual approach?

Even after selecting the key elements, I struggled to find the right stylistic direction. Fortunately, I came across the works of Mr. Daisuke Futamura. Within his illustrations, I found a character that perfectly embodied the spirit of youth I had in mind—silly, awkward, quirky, and just a little rebellious. When we introduced six vibrant, contrasting core colors into the illustrations, I thought to myself: “There it is—youth has finally arrived.”

These bright and clashing colors symbolize the passion, boldness, conflict, and defiance of adolescence, vividly bringing to life those fearless and reckless years. Visually, we boldly embraced solid color backgrounds and a clean, refreshing aesthetic, hoping to offer audiences a fresh new take on the Kaohsiung Film Festival’s visual identity.

At the heart of the design is the “Fireball Man,” a long-standing symbol of the Kaohsiung Film Festival and a tribute to the fiery spirit of southern Taiwan. His return this year feels especially fitting—like youth itself, he makes a bold comeback.
